Guatemala's Independence Day

16 September 2013

Buenos Dias,

How is everyone? I thought Brad went into the MTC last week. I guess I was a week behind. Looks like you all had a fun trip in Italy. So crazy seeing the old house and our school. Not much has changed.

Right now Guatemala is celebrating its independence. I wouldn’t say they are the most patriotic country. Yesterday there was a parade and we saw it as we walked to lunch. They don’t do floats; it’s mostly students walking with the queen of their school and the school band. They aren’t allowed to march here apparently when they signed the peace treaty they nixed the marching. I have always found certain styles of marching a little scary like the China and North Korea style of marching. So I guess I get it. I think in around the 70s here there was a guerrilla war where a lot of the native people were killed by the military government.  We also sang the Guatemalan National anthem after sacrament meeting. They have a nice anthem you should look it up.

(Readers: here’s a link to a YouTube video that plays children singing the national anthem and shows pictures of Guatemala.   KLD.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX_4ZWbAq-A

On Friday we went to visit one of our investigators who was super positive. She has gone to visit her family for 2 days and when she came back she was completely different. Her family was upset with her that she had been going to church with us, they couldn’t believe that she was abandoning the things they had taught her. It was a pretty intense lesson we had with her. We shared a scripture with her from Helaman 5 where after the Lamanites are converted they lay down their weapons and leave the traditions of their fathers. At the end of the lesson she told us she wanted to follow the traditions of her fathers. It was really sad to hear her say that. Especially after being with her when she has felt the Spirit so strong and then to deny that for fear of what her family would think of her. I love this work. I love seeing people axcept Christ as their Savior and giving up their sins to follow Him and to leave behind their old traditions and start a new life. It’s sad to see this sister reject us but I know it’s not the end. Heavenly Father loves her as he loves all of this children and he gives us many opportunities to repent.

Love you all very much!
