Hearing an Apostle of the Lord

20 January 2014

Hola!

Como estan? Espero que muy bien! This week was amazing for me! So many things happened. We made peach cobbler in a wood-burning stove. We were going to make it with coal like a Dutch oven. But the family didn’t have coal so we had to make it in their stove. It was a little complicated cause the fire was too hot and burned the bottom. We kept moving burnt parts of the wood from the bottom to the top of the pot. It was complicated but it turned out tasty. None of the peaches burned so it was all good.

I went to Toto with the Hermanas to do divisions. Their house was so cold! I was shaking the whole time. I had like 5 blankets at night and I was still cold. Their whole sector in the city doesn’t have water right now so they go to the landlady’s to shower in the morning. Next to the wood stove is a water heater that is heated by the stove. Then the water is pumped to the bathroom. It was the warmest shower I have taken in over a year. The bathroom was steamy!

We had some really good lessons this week. Melvin who is part of the Barrios family didn’t get baptized. He is 11 and didn’t want to. We talked to him a lot and finally last week he told us why he didn’t want to be baptized. It was because in one of the activities at church the youth danced and he didn’t think it was ok to listen to worldly music. We read the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet with him (the part about music and dancing). He cleared up his doubt but didn’t accept a baptismal date. He wanted to get his own answer that he had to be baptized. Two days later when he got to his house he hugged us and told us he was ready to be baptized. He will be baptized on Saturday with his uncle Elisandro. I know God answers our prayers.

(From the Dad/Editor: For the Strength of Youth is a great pamphlet that teaches church youth good standards to live by, here’s a link:  https://www.lds.org/youth/for-the-strength-of-youth?lang=eng )

And then on Saturday we got to go to Xela and listen to Elder Cook. (Elder Quentin Cook is one of the Twelve Apostles in our church. KLD) It was amazing. He talked about so many things. But the main part of is message was establishing Zion. And that as missionaries it’s part of our calling to be outgoing. His wife also spoke to us; she talked about the attributes of Christ which are in Preach My Gospel. And how she has done an activity to put a hymn with every attribute. She also had us sing “Hark all ye Nations” and she taught us a little descant part. It was cool. And also really powerful to hear our whole mission sing it. Best part of the conference was when Elder Cook shared his testimony. The spirit spoke to every one of us that he is an apostle of Christ that he knows Him, and he knows his voice.

He also came to our stake on Sunday. It was also very special but I felt that Saturday was more for me. And my responsibility on Sunday was to make sure that Hermana Karina’s kids were calm so she could focus.

I am so grateful for the opportunity that I had to see Elder Cook this week. It was something I will never forget. It strengthened my testimony so much. I was really reminded that this is not my work. It’s Christ’s work. And he is present in every moment.

Love,

Hermana Davies
