Buenos Dias!
Well this week was a little crazy! On Tuesday I went to Momos
and did exchanges with the Hermanas there. When I got there it started to rain
so we took a tutut, which is a taxi but the base of it is a motorcycle with a
little cab attached to it. Anyway, we were out in the mountain when it broke
down and we ended up pushing it to get it to start again. When we got to the
member’s house, Hermana Lisonbee was attacked by a dog. Luckily she was able to
fight it off with her umbrella. Which is basically now broken and did not
protect us from the downpour in the walk back home.
This week Marta, Zara and Carlos were baptized. And it was truly
a miracle. We had been praying and fasting that Marta would be able to talk to
her son before Saturday, but nothing. We had a lesson with her and it was
pretty clear she wasn’t going to be baptized without talking to him. Well Saturday
morning we left the house praying that she had talked to her son. We asked her
if she had talked to him. She said no! But then she said...she decided she would
be baptized anyway! Ahh miracles! The baptism was really nice you could feel
that these sisters and Carlos really wanted to make this covenant with God. We
sang a little musical number with the Elders and it was quite nice.
Oh when I was in Momos the Hermana I was with had just left the
CCM and she was telling about when they were playing volley ball and she said
"blah blah blah Elder Tingey" I stopped her and said Elder Tingey
from Arizona. Turns out he was in the CCM at the same time. Small world.
Tomorrow I am going on vacation to Guatemala City. I have to go
to a hotel tonight then in the morning we are leaving at 3am! Ahh! We are
teaching 2 couples who aren’t married hopefully there are wedding bells in the
air!
I hope you are all doing well. Things here are really good,
getting along with my companion. She is really teaching me so much. God
puts the right people in our path to help us grow and become the people God
wants us to be.
Love you all!
Hermana Davies
1. How would you rate the Guatemalans at hymn singing at church?
Eh, the ward I am in right now isn’t too bad but sometimes it
can be a little pitchy and they like to slide :)
2. Do they have any hymns in their hymnbook that we don’t have
in the English hymnbook?
Yes, not very many. One of them is Plancentero nos es trabajar. It’s
a missionary song. Supposedly some missionaries in Mexico wrote it. No one
wanted to listen to them so they changed the lyrics to another church’s hymn.
3. What is the music like in your services (Piano? Organ?
Special musical numbers?)?
No special numbers but the choir did sing for ward conference.
They have a keyboard. You know it has a push and play button.
4. Do people in Guatemala like to sing?
I think so; the older people seem to like it.
5. Have you heard any popular local music? What’s it like?
I don’t know any that is specific to Guate. But they listen to
bachata and lots of Mexican music.
